Fourteen North Polk sixth-grade students competed in Ames Public Library’s Battle of the Books on April 6. The team, Golden Zach, made up of Zach Sporaa, Austin Steirman, Cora Reed and Kiara Jesse were one of six teams that earned 190 out of 200 points in the first two rounds. This qualified them for the final round of competition. The Sour Patch Kids missed the finals by only one question. The students on that team were Max Sporaa, Maddie Bond and Olivia Moody.

Twenty-seven teams from Ames, Madrid, Colo-Nesco, East Green, Ballard and North Polk participated. Teams of students earned points for answering questions about books they had been reading from a list over the past year.

Any fifth-grade student at Central who was interested in Battle of the Books received the list of 18 books in June 2016. Students who had read six of the books by the end of November were placed on a team. The teams have been meeting with Mrs. Schwab for the last three months to prepare for the competition. Current fifth-graders will be able to get the sixth-grade list at the end of this school year.
