This Tuesday, Feb. 4, community volunteer Cynthia Oppedal Paschen will formally announce her candidacy for the Iowa Senate. Paschen, a Democrat, will run in Iowa’s 23rd District which includes Ames and Kelley, as well as the townships of Grant, Milford and Washington. The event will be held at Ames Community Pre School’s new location on 920 Carroll Ave. at 10 a.m. in the ACPC Board Room.

ACPC’s Director Sue Wuhs will introduce Paschen, who will then make a short address about her campaign goals, future constituents and education in District 23, which includes Ames and Kelley. After Paschen’s remarks, she and Ms. Wuhs will lead an informal tour of the new ASPC facility. The event will end with Cynthia as a guest reader in the Dragonfly Class on the South end of the campus.

Paschen intends to make education a centerpiece for her campaign this spring, saying, "I know first-hand about education and family in Iowa, and will listen and work for children and families in the Iowa State Senate."

Cynthia Paschen lives on Graeber Street in Ames with her husband, pediatrician Dr. John Paschen of McFarland Clinic and Mary Greeley Medical Center. They have two children, Emma and Madeline. Madeline is a graduate of Ames High School and Agnes Scott College in Decatur, GA. Emma is a graduate of Ames High School, DMACC and studies at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.

After graduating Iowa State University in 1982, Paschen has logged many hours of service at central Iowa organizations including The Memorial Union, Youth and Shelter Services, Homeward Hospice, Israel Family Hospice House, Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women in Politics, Ames Public Library, AIDS Coalition of Story County and St. Thomas Aquinas Parish.

Paschen says, "My engagement in the central Iowa community over the last 30 years makes me uniquely qualified for Iowa Senate. I will work with compassion and compromise to make Iowa the best place in the world to get an education, raise a family, and thrive."
