Firefighter and EMS open house

The Maxwell firefighters and EMS personnel held an open house this past Saturday to show off the station, and also to have awareness for Fire Prevention Week. Firefighters gave out goodie bags and fire hats for all the kids, and had free smoke detectors on hand as well. They also had demonstrations on how the Jaws of Life worked, and showed how they cut small pieces of steel with their "cutters," which is part of the Jaws of Life set of tools they use for vehicle extrication.

Stop, drop, and roll was another fun station. Kids and even a few parents were able to practice this on a mat on the station floor. But the most popular station was the "put the fire out," where kids and even a few adults were able to shoot a fire hose at a small wooden house, and try to aim the water at small windows and a doorway.

EMS demonstrated how they strap a patient to the backboard for transport, even turning them upside down just to show how secure they are. People were able to get inside, look at the ambulance, ask the EMS members all kinds of questions and see how things work.

The firefighters and EMS are always in need of new volunteers to join. If you are interested or have questions about what is involved with becoming a firefighter or EMS, they would like to invite you to their meetings. Oct. 21. at 7 p.m. is the next fire meeting and Nov. 13, at 6:30 p.m. is the next EMS meeting; both are held at the fire station in the back meeting room.

And remember that the firefighters will be having their annual Hunter’s Breakfast on Oct. 26 at the firestation - all proceeds will be going towards the Story County Freedom Rock.
