Editorial staff from the Ames Tribune and its affiliated papers received 11 awards at Friday night’s Iowa Newspaper Association’s Better Newspaper Contest banquet in Des Moines.
The awards were handed out during the banquet, culminating the association’s annual convention and trade show at the Marriott Hotel.
The Tribune staff received awards for sports, news and editorial writing. The Tribune received second-place awards for coverage of government and politics and best website.
Editor Michael Crumb received a second-place award for best news story.
The Tribune received a third-place award for best sports section, while former Tribune sports writer Joseph Hoyt was recognized with a third-place award for best sports feature.
Crumb also received a first-place award in the Excellence in Editorial Writing category.
Marlys Barker, the editor of the Tri-County Times and the Nevada Journal, received a first-place award for best news story. The Story City Herald was recognized with a second-place award for its coverage of business.
The Perry Chief was awarded a third-place award for best use of social media, while the Perry Chief’s Kiley Wellendorf was recognized with a third-place award in the best slideshow category. Dan Mika, a Tribune staffer, received a nod for his video work with a third-place prize for video he produced for the Perry Chief.
All the papers are owned by GateHouse Media.
