Four Nevada-area cancer survivors — Donna Borton, Barb Ahlquist McDaniel, Karen Twedt and Mary Jo Kellogg — are inviting others in the community and all of Story County to join them in a “more local” walk for the cure taking place in Nevada on Saturday, Oct. 28.

Kellogg said local survivors and supporters have walked in Nevada since 2010, in what started seven years ago as a way to still support the fight against cancer, without having to make a trip to Des Moines for the official Susan Komen event. It also, Kellogg said, allows local walkers to make donations to the cancer charity of their choice, and every year, she takes the funds (with each person writing a check for their chosen one) for each of those charities and delivers them following the walk. Some ideas of charities are: Bliss Cancer Center, Israel Hospice House, Childhood Awareness Against Cancer, American Cancer and Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

This year’s walk will start at 9 a.m., and walkers will meet at the Story County 4-H Fairgrounds, near the horse arena, a little before 9 for a group picture. All cancer survivors, friends and family members and others who support the fight against cancer are welcome to join the walk along the trail in Nevada, much of which winds along the Indian Creek.

Before walking in Nevada, the local walkers did the official race in Des Moines for 11 years. But the trip down is more difficult than walking locally. “We enjoy our walk in Nevada, because it’s easier for family and friends to support cancer and the fund of their choice,” Kellogg said.

Kellogg said all those who join in are invited to walk whatever distance they would like. If it is possible for participants to call ahead and let Kellogg know they are going to attend, she would appreciate the call at 515-382-2350.
