The Iowa Farmers Union (IFU) today urged the U.S. Senate to confirm the appointment of Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey to the post of Undersecretary for Farm Production and Conservation. The position was established in May as part of a re-organization at USDA.

“We hope Secretary Northey brings his administrative expertise to the position along with an appreciation of the family farm structure of Iowa agriculture. We offer our support as he begins this new role and we look forward to working with him.”

The Iowa Farmers Union also asked the U.S. Senate to reject the appointment of Iowan Sam Clovis to the post of USDA’s under secretary for research, education and economics, a position that would see him overseeing billions of dollars in research spending.

“Unfortunately the appointment of Sam Clovis just isn’t a good fit. More than ever, we need a true scientist in this position. We also are concerned that this position will need to direct research to help farmers deal with climate change and Mr. Clovis’s stated positions don’t indicate that he will be in a position to do this.”
