SAYDEL – Being shorthanded didn’t matter for the North Polk boys’ track team at the Saydel Invitational Saturday as the Comet boys claimed a team championship for the third time in as many meets.

The North Polk boys were without three individuals gone on a senior trip, plus four juniors out taking ACTs. Despite the losses, the Comets still won four events and took second in four more as they scored 101 points to edge Nevada’s 93.5-point effort for first among eight teams.

Clay Cory won an individual gold and North Polk also took first in three relays on the day.

Cory easily dispatched his opposition in the 400-meter low hurdles Cory completed the race in 57.65 seconds to beat his nearest competitor – Saydel’s Clayton Sommers – by over three seconds for the gold as Sommers ran a 1:00.87.

Cory also ran the opening leg on the Comets’ victorious shuttle hurdle relay team. Austin Williams, Russell Greene and Jordan Nathan ran the final three legs as North Polk ran a :59.99 to top Saydel by 3.52 seconds for a decisive triumph.

North Polk also seized the gold in the 4 X 800. Ryley Sandberg, Zach Brecht, Dillon McBee and Nathaniel Long teamed to run a 9:03.22 to defeat Nevada by over 24 seconds for another dominant Comet victory.

The 4 X 400 was the other event to produce a gold medal for North Polk. Reed Smith and Brandon Albaugh joined McBee and Long to run a time of 3:35.03 to edge Colfax-Mingo’s 3:35.79 for the title.

The Comets added a second-place finish in the 4 X 200. Williams, Albaugh, Matt Cox and Cory combined to run a 1:35.87 to trail only the 1:34.43 run by Bondurant-Farrar.

Long won a pair of individual silver medals.

Long ran a :52.51 in the open 400 to come in just behind the :52.43 run by Nevada’s Colynn Black. In the 800 Long finished in 1:59.82, crossing the finish line just behind the winning time of 1:59.14 by Martensdale St. Marys’ Trent Verwers, and he just edged the third-place effort of 1:59.91 by Perry’s Atem Akok.

Paul Robidoux also won a silver medal in a distance running event for North Polk. Robidoux took second in the 3,200 with a time of 10:55.26.

Nathan, Greene and Sandberg each added a bronze medal for North Polk.

Nathan took third in the high jump after clearing five feet, six inches and Greene was third in the 110 high hurdles after completing the race in :15.84. Sandberg came in third in the 1,600 when he clocked in at 4:50.09.

The North Polk girls came in fifth out of eight teams at Saydel.

The Comet girls picked up four silver and bronze medals apiece. They totaled 70 points to beat Nevada by 10 points for fifth and finished nine points behind I-35 for fourth; Des Moines Christian won the girls’ title with 106 points.

Alex Quick and Sybbie Sears both stepped up in hurdle events for North Polk.

In the 100 hurdles, Sears took second :16.97 and Quick was third with a time of :17.17. I-35’s Ellen Lupkes won the race in :16.71.

Quick also ran the 400 hurdles, and she clocked in at 1:13.81 to trail only the 1:08.95 run by Lupkes.

Rebecca Sieve also won a silver medal in the discus. Her top throw was 99-1, only topped by the 113-10 thrown by South Tama’s Samantha Holtz.

Sears helped North Polk take second in the sprint medley relay. Malinda Van Dorn, Lilly Lomica and Samantha Sinclair ran the first three legs for the Comets as they finished in 2:00.69, less than one-tenth of a second behind Nevada’s winning time of 2:00.60.

Sears, Quick and Sinclair joined Melanie Leach in running a 4:42.67 in the distance medley to give North Polk a bronze medal in the event. Sinclair won an individual bronze in the 800 with a time of 2:35.10, and Van Dorn was third in the 100 after crossing the finish line :14.04.
