Collins School History – Baseball 1963 - 65 Seasons

Collins team had favorable 1964 Spring Season — won over Mingo 1-0, and Roland 5-2 in the Sectional Tourney. Also, won over St. Mary’s (Marshalltown) 4-1 in the Ta-Ma-Ja Conference Tourney; Lost in the finals to Bondurant-Farrar 4-3 in 8th inning. Spring Season record: 4 and 4. The prior ’63 Fall Season was 4 losses.
Fall ’64 Season had a unique occurrence. Collins defeated Roland 10-0 in season opener. Collins lost the following 5 games, 2-1, 3-2, 3-1, 5-3, and 4-3 for a total of only 7 runs.
Spring ’65 Sectional Tourney: Gary Pointer pitched a no-hitter, losing to New Providence 2-0. Two New Providence players who received walks were able to score with aggressive base running. The Ta-Ma-Ja Conference Season record: 5 wins, 3 losses, (won over St. Mary’s of Marshalltown 3 times) for 2nd in conference games. Also achieved 2nd in the Ta-Ma-Ja Conference Tourney. Gary Pointer was primary pitcher with Jim Hale catching.
